Notes and where they come from.

The anatomy of singing - pretty cool shown visually. :D It also shows regions of the chest, middle, and head voice. Notice that the higher notes come from the nasal area, and not at the top of your lung. Singing high / soprano notes from your lung could harm your voice when you push it, though I have that bad habit myself time to time. The best way to locate the region to sing from is to do a lip roll which is a “brrrr” sound (like a helicopter), which also helps expand your range.

Boats & Birds
(Cover by Soulfully)
By Gregory and the Hawk

I haven’t posted a cover (much less an actual song) in awhile. But I’ve been recently addicted to a song called Boats and Birds— The lyrics are fantastically written, and the meaning of this song is incredibly beautiful.

If you’ll be my star, I’ll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine, I live to let you shine

And you can sky-rocket away from me
And never come back if you find another galaxy
Far from here with more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by

If you’ll be my boat, I’ll be your sea
The depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity
Ebbing and flowing and pushed by a breeze
I live to make you free, I live to make you free

But you can set sail to the west if you want to
And past the horizon till I can’t even see you
Far from here where the beaches are wide
Just leave me your wake to remember you by

On Singing Multilingually.

I wonder if anyone else could relate to the feeling? This is the sort of thing that I could either feel extremely frustrated by, or pleasantly hopeful for. Though, at the moment, I’m torn between the two. And before I forget, this is a relevant article to today’s topic.

Look After You - The Fray [Cover]

If I don’t say this now I will surely break
As I’m leaving the one I want to take
Forgive the urgency but hurry up and wait
My heart has started to separate

Oh, oh, oh
Be my darling
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
I’ll look after you

(Lyrics)

Another cover from the Fray that I had been planning to do for awhile. It’s fun to sing because there’s a certain way the lyrics roll off my tongue conveniently. Admittedly, I think this cover & Vienna stands out from all the previous ones I’ve made. I’ve learned little things and included them along the way while recording these past few months — usually doing one of these: harmonizing, changing the song to my style, singing in low or head voice, adding a chorus-like texture to the voice, and much more. But this rendition of “Look After You” encapsulates most of what I had learned, and I’m happy with that. (And the high pitches, too.)

Balloons by Soulfully —

My third completed lyric song. It was written from my personal feelings about how I relate to music — a balloon seemed to encapsulate the things I wanted to express. Enjoy, I think that it’s a stepping stone from the previous songs I’ve made.

[Verse]
Your head is up in the clouds
Working past these heavy doubts
But the rain cascades, starts to escalade
You start to burst — could things get worse?

Thought I was kept safe at bay
But I was just carried away
Down I go and it feels so slow
Falling into nothing, trying to call for something

[Chorus]
A thousand balloons, they bursted too soon
Pops and drops, trying to wait for June
A thousand hues, flooding like a monsoon
Drips and drops, below the summer moon

Greatest Love of All (WIP) - Whitney Houston

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody’s searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

Usually I’ll post complete covers (and I will of this later) but I’m in no condition to sing. But hearing about Whitney’s sudden passing made we want to sing this song, one I hold very dearly to my heart.

Complete cover to come soon after I’m in better health — I’m very tired at the moment and it shows through my voice. :[

Mindfulness (WIP#1 1.17.12)

I’m just carrying

The shadows of my broken dreams

That’s all you really need to know

But no, no, no you cannot end

Left dead at square one instead

You ain’t no friend*

So here’s what I’ll say instead:

You can try to run, try to hide*

But I’m by your side, it’s me you’re fighting inside*

I’m losing my mind, losing my mind… (repeat)

* The “you” I use here is directed to myself; an inner voice. I realized that it might be confusing.

Well, it is certainly unexpected to have one of my first lyrics be based off today (and many other days) but I think this will do. I kind of lost track at the ending where I kept repeating the same phrase (“losing my mind”) and I was going to redo it but oh well, my sister liked it.

I realize posting this makes me seem like some kind of sappy, bitter, or overly depressed individual (I’m not), but I’m sure people have times where they feel this in life. The feeling of not being able to accomplish anything, to catch up, or to improve, etc. I’ll just be honest enough to post it up and not shy my thoughts away, simply because as a first piece for anything (and as a starting point) it’s not all that terrible. And plus I like singing with vibrato, and I got to use it! :)

Now I’m aware there’s not a lot of instrumentation, the chords are not supremely difficult, and the words are barely understandable (at least to me) without reading the lyrics. Still a lot to brush up if I ever plan to take this from a tune to a song.

But the point is, today was a bad day. But bad days can turn out better. They most certainly can.

Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer 1/8/12

Oh kiss me out of the bearded barley,
Nightly , beside the green, green grass
Swing, swing, swing the spinning step
You’ll wear those shoes and I will wear that dress

Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift you open hand
Strike up the band, and make the fireflies dance
Silvermoon’s sparkling,
So kiss me

Kiss me down by the broken tree house
Swing me , upon its hanging tire
Bring, bring , bring your flowered hat
We’ll take the trail marked on your father’s map

Oooh, two covers within the same hour.

This is just a cover of a song I’ve quite for awhile that I’ve liked its tune for. Kind of another one of those “cover junkies” that I like to sing relaxedly for fun. Also a speed cover, done in 5 minutes. Extra 10 for volume adjustments, a lame echo, and nothing more. Usually I sing this with a lot more energy but I guess 12 am’s getting to me, ehh. 8’l

PS: Still not sleepy enough, so let me kill my ears and yours by singing a favorite song of ours…..

* Credits to this for instrumental track.

(*Edit: volume adjusted again, this is a new version)

(*Edit2: I just noticed it was cut off, sorry about that! Replaced with final version, whoops)

Where the Story Ends - The Fray (Cover) 1/7/12

Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I’ll do instead, lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I’ve done, silhouette til the good lord come

All we know is distance
We’re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one

Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, you’ve got
All you ever knew of home, you’re scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go

Dedicated to a special friend! :)

To you: I’m glad that we met. Thanks for being an awesome friend, and I hope that we can still be awesome / radical / creepy this year and beyond. So this is for you. (And sorry that it took so long!)

End of the World - Skeeter Davis (Cover) 1.3.12

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don’t they know it’s the end of the world,
‘Cause you don’t love me any more?

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don’t they know it’s the end of the world.
It ended when I lost your love.

I wake up in the morning and I wonder,
Why everything’s the same as it was.
I can’t understand. No, I can’t understand,
How life goes on the way it does.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don’t they know it’s the end of the world.
It ended when you said goodbye.

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don’t they know it’s the end of the world.
It ended when you said goodbye.

Ironic this is the first cover I’m posting up in 2012. All end of the world jokes aside, this is an emotional song that I’ve been waiting to post up for awhile. I’ve known this song for as long I can remember.

I think I did some interesting vocal techniques this time around, not sure if I pulled it off well. (But if my voice sounds really sad, then that’s all I really need to know.) Dedicated to someone that I don’t know will listen to it, but here’s to you… And also for a cat and rabbit many, many years ago that grew me up as much as they grew me.

This week I’ll be posting a lot of nostalgic oldies songs I’ve sung in the past, so expect some Carpenters or ABBA coming your way soon!

Hello to all musicians!

I don’t know whether this will work, but I’m going to try tagging it. I’m looking for music references and would be glad to follow anyone that’s also interested in these: theory, composition, producing, audio engineering, or singing. (And the rest in the tags.) It’s a bit hard to find music resources on tumblr and I’m also new to this kind of network, so I’d love if there could be some guidance on this. :)

Are there any general blogs around or people?

I’ll keep looking around in the meantime.

“Over My Head” - The Fray Cover

(Best with headphones)

I never knew
I never knew that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue
To turn and run when all I needed was the truth
But that’s how it’s got to be
It’s coming down to nothing more than apathy
I’d rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who’s still standing when it clears

Everyone knows I’m in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She’s on your mind
She’s on your mind

Let’s rearrange
I wish you were a stranger I could disengage
Just say that we agree and then never change
Soften a bit until we all just get along
But that’s disregard
Find another friend and you discard
As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between

I See the Light(Tangled Soundtrack)

All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I’ve been
Now I’m here, blinking in the starlight
Now I’m here, suddenly I see
Standing here, it’s all so clear
I’m where I’m meant to be

And at last I see the light
And it’s like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it’s like the sky is new
And it’s warm and real and bright
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different
Now that I see you
