Boats & Birds
(Cover by Soulfully)
By Gregory and the Hawk

I haven’t posted a cover (much less an actual song) in awhile. But I’ve been recently addicted to a song called Boats and Birds— The lyrics are fantastically written, and the meaning of this song is incredibly beautiful.

If you’ll be my star, I’ll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black and you show off your light
I live to let you shine, I live to let you shine

And you can sky-rocket away from me
And never come back if you find another galaxy
Far from here with more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by

If you’ll be my boat, I’ll be your sea
The depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity
Ebbing and flowing and pushed by a breeze
I live to make you free, I live to make you free

But you can set sail to the west if you want to
And past the horizon till I can’t even see you
Far from here where the beaches are wide
Just leave me your wake to remember you by

Look After You - The Fray [Cover]

If I don’t say this now I will surely break
As I’m leaving the one I want to take
Forgive the urgency but hurry up and wait
My heart has started to separate

Oh, oh, oh
Be my darling
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
I’ll look after you

(Lyrics)

Another cover from the Fray that I had been planning to do for awhile. It’s fun to sing because there’s a certain way the lyrics roll off my tongue conveniently. Admittedly, I think this cover & Vienna stands out from all the previous ones I’ve made. I’ve learned little things and included them along the way while recording these past few months — usually doing one of these: harmonizing, changing the song to my style, singing in low or head voice, adding a chorus-like texture to the voice, and much more. But this rendition of “Look After You” encapsulates most of what I had learned, and I’m happy with that. (And the high pitches, too.)

[Cover] “Somewhere Out There“

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight
Someone’s thinking of me and loving me tonight
Somewhere out there someone’s saying a prayer
That we’ll find one another in that big somewhere out there

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we’re sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we’ll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

A cover of Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram’s rendition of “Somewhere Out There.” Originally from a movie that you might be well acquainted with, called “An American Tail”. (1986)

Formalities aside, I’ve always loved this song and it’s been on my singing list for quite awhile. I finally got around to it after being reminded of nights with bright moon rays peering through a dark room.

[5/25/12] Fix You - Coldplay (Cover)

(Best with headphones)

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Despite the simplicity of the melody, this was actually quite the challenge to record! I found myself re-recording over.. and over.. again. Anyway, posting it up because some people encouraged me to post it up. So hey, yet another something I can stick to my portfolio. Posted for a special occasion.

#3 Eyes on Me - Faye Wong

This is a rather sweet nostalgic song, I might make it again later. I have quite a lot of feelings about FF8…

I was having trouble deciding between a rock song and this ballad, but I figured this one was more vocally challenging, and my falsetto is rather weak in some parts. I made some mistakes here and there that I’ll probably cringe years later, but if anything skip to the middle and listen to the chorus. My only regret is that it doesn’t sound as soft and tender as I’d like…

I should probably stop it here, my covers seem to be worsening. At the moment, my voice is actually very tired. I’m going over my 1 hour limit and done with procrastinating on some very important work. Whoops!

PS: for people who like gumdrops and rainbows

#2 Why do All Good Things - Nelly Furtado

Quite a nice song, I messed up often though. As much as I want to check the songs off my list, it seems the easier the song the harder it is for me to focus. x_x

It has rather melancholic lyrics, and I forgot where I first heard this from. I think of pretty ember sparks, though. Or Autumn Leaves withering away. Not the greatest cover (I feel like I sound too young in the verses) but I’ve still got 15 minutes to go sooo, next!

#1 Torn - Natalie Imbruglia

I’m going to rush through a list of songs, I’ll start with this one. If anyone would like to hear an official version (full song + better mic) then feel free to tell me. :D Otherwise, they’ll be snippets never to be fully recorded, heh.

This one gives me fond memories, particularly because my mom played this often in the car radio years ago, perhaps when I was 8 years old? We’d all bobble our heads up and down with the song. I remember that this wasn’t my favorite song on the album but ah well. Anyway, next!

[Cover] How Far We’ve Come - Matchbox 20

Waking up at the start of the end of the world,
But it’s feeling just like every other morning before,
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it’s gone,

The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour
And I started staring at the passengers who’re waving goodbye
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time?

I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well I guess we’re gonna find out
Let’s see how far we’ve come
Let’s see how far we’ve come
Well I believe it all is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess, we’re gonna pretend,
Let’s see how far we’ve come
Let’s see how far we’ve come

I think it turned ten o’clock but I don’t really know
And I can’t remember caring for an hour or so
Started crying and I couldn’t stop myself
I started running but there’s no where to run to
I sat down on the street took a look at myself
Said where you going man you know the world is headed for hell
Say your goodbyes if you’ve got someone you can say goodbye to

[a capella] Gravity - Maaya Sakamoto

A quick cover of Gravity before I sleep. I’d love to add piano, but there’s unfortunately no instrumental around. Lovely song with lovely lyrics, check out the original if you have time.

* This might be overly loud, so careful with the volume…?

been a long road to follow
been there and gone tomorrow
without saying goodbye to yesterday
are the memories I hold still valid?
or have the tears deluded them?
maybe this time tomorrow
the rain will cease to follow
and the mist will fade into one more today
something somewhere out there keeps calling
am I going home?
will I hear someone singing solace to the silent moon?
zero gravity what’s it like?
am I alone?
is somebody there beyond these heavy aching feet
still the road keeps on telling me to go on
something is pulling me
I feel the gravity of it all

[Cover] All In - The Grouch & Eligh

So, I covered a rap song. ”Wait AHAHA, Soulfully raps?” Well not usually, but ever have that song that you love to sing for the kicks even though you can’t do it justice? Yup, this one’s it for me. I thought it’d be a nice change of pace to sing this for fun and as self-encouragement.

I’ve listened to this obscure song obsessively last year for a time when the first verse and chorus resonated with me. This is only a snippet of the song, not the full one. (Because I fail epically with the next rap part) Anyway, enjoy this upbeat/motivational song haha (yeah I don’t know what’s up with 2nd verse):

To me it seems you’ve lost your steam
Your steam it seems you’ve lost it, lost it
Demons haunt your thinking, freedom gone
And all exhausted (exhausted)
Dreaming dreams of fortune, all your deeds
Are impromptu and not in sync with laws
And warnings never heeded while you block them
Marching forth and choosing what to keep and leave
Consistently you’re falling, all or nothing
Please I’ll tweak it out, I think I’m on to something
Now you’re beat to pieces and the pieces and the parts are busted
All your greatest thinking got you sinking in the rotten gutter
Now it’s nothing left, but everything to gain,
No options, so you walk the narrow steps to the domains
That have been calling soldier
All of the resistance kept you out from what is within
If you follow it, it rises from inside ya up and over, ALL IN!

[CHORUS –]
Spent half my life on a search for nothin’
I came up with somethin’
It’s on again!
I found myself by the river and jumped in!
It’s all or nothing, gotta be all in
Be all in, gotta be all in, be all in
Yeah it’s all or nothing!
Be all in, gotta be all in, be all in
Yeah it’s all or nothing
(REPEAT)

[VERSE 2 – ]
To make me feel right
Give me wealth and real life
And then mix it together like popcorn and butter right
Order the Tapatio, sit and I talk to Rio
Listening to music like that old Innercity Griots
Pretty females all in my life
Yup, that’s how it had to be so now I call one my wife
Give me my order organic
I need my border Hispanic
I mean I love it in Cali
But out in Maui it’s woww-wee
So, somebody get me a ticket
No need for packing a biscuit
I want more laughing and giggling
Need more passion and wisdom
Give some and take some
I don’t want no fake ones
If I need new friends then I’ll make some

[Chorus…]

Greatest Love of All (WIP) - Whitney Houston

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody’s searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

Usually I’ll post complete covers (and I will of this later) but I’m in no condition to sing. But hearing about Whitney’s sudden passing made we want to sing this song, one I hold very dearly to my heart.

Complete cover to come soon after I’m in better health — I’m very tired at the moment and it shows through my voice. :[

Kiss Me - Sixpence None the Richer 1/8/12

Oh kiss me out of the bearded barley,
Nightly , beside the green, green grass
Swing, swing, swing the spinning step
You’ll wear those shoes and I will wear that dress

Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift you open hand
Strike up the band, and make the fireflies dance
Silvermoon’s sparkling,
So kiss me

Kiss me down by the broken tree house
Swing me , upon its hanging tire
Bring, bring , bring your flowered hat
We’ll take the trail marked on your father’s map

Oooh, two covers within the same hour.

This is just a cover of a song I’ve quite for awhile that I’ve liked its tune for. Kind of another one of those “cover junkies” that I like to sing relaxedly for fun. Also a speed cover, done in 5 minutes. Extra 10 for volume adjustments, a lame echo, and nothing more. Usually I sing this with a lot more energy but I guess 12 am’s getting to me, ehh. 8’l

PS: Still not sleepy enough, so let me kill my ears and yours by singing a favorite song of ours…..

* Credits to this for instrumental track.

(*Edit: volume adjusted again, this is a new version)

(*Edit2: I just noticed it was cut off, sorry about that! Replaced with final version, whoops)

Where the Story Ends - The Fray (Cover) 1/7/12

Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I’ll do instead, lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I’ve done, silhouette til the good lord come

All we know is distance
We’re close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one

Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, you’ve got
All you ever knew of home, you’re scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go
